Do you buy a kit car or bike and build new or do you find an old beat up project car of bike and start there? As with many things, the answer is not a simple as the question. In other words, it depends greatly on what you personally want to accomplish, why you are thinking about doing it to begin with and your skills and abilities and of course your budget. Taking a car completely apart and doing a frame off rebuild or restoration is quite possibly much more difficult than building from scratch to begin with. But if you are in love with a particular car or bike and you enjoy the process it might be the only way to go. On the other hand if you prefer to be putting something together instead of having to take it apart first, then a kit or a new build from scratch might be just what you are looking for. Either way the advances in technology and the multitude of suppliers available are going to make your decision much more enjoyable and easier than it might have been a couple of decades or more ago. There are composite molded parts available for just about every kind of car that has ever been built and aftermarket improvements and modification parts for virtually anything. Core engines are still relatively easy to come by... unless you are looking for something that was rare to begin with and extremely popular, in which case you can probably still find it - but it will be much more expensive than other engine choices. Bikes are available as "rolling" kits or as a single piece at a time literally as you need and can afford to buy components. The costs saving from scratch building a bike can be 50% to 70% or even more off what it would cost retail... and it will be built exactly the way YOU want it. A word of caution... There are many good suppliers who are honest hard working people and organizations trying to provide top quality parts and kits at decent prices. Unfortunately there are many other dirtbags out there who take orders, accept tens of thousands of dollars in payments and either deliver nothing or eventually deliver very inferior products that are nothing more than expensive junk. I have read about countless horror stories of kits or components not being delivered at all, others being delivered months over due and then when they finally do come in they have damage, and or components that are missing or do not fit properly. The term is normally associated with real estate by definition, but I think the general meaning makes since when dealing with kit suppliers and parts and component suppliers as well. Its always a good idea to see examples of finished products, talk with other customers about their experiences - good or bad.
Getting started .... Once you have your project selected then its time to get started. One of the most important things you can do is to simply do something everyday. It doesn't have to be much, but consistent small efforts applied over time will all ad up to big progress and get your project finished. Be sure to send us some photos and information on your experiences so we can share it with other builders! |
